The deer in Nara Park are tame and friendly, though they still retain some of their natural instincts. Tourists often come to the park to see and interact with the deer, as the animals roam freely throughout the area. Visitors can feed the deer special crackers called “shika senbei,” which are sold throughout the park. The deer have even learned to bow to visitors in exchange for food, a gesture that is both fascinating and symbolic of their intelligence.
