The Hill of the Buddha (頭大仏, Atama Daibutsu) is a striking Buddhist shrine nestled within the Makomanai Takino Cemetery in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, this spiritual and architectural marvel opened in December 2015. The shrine’s centerpiece is a 13.5-meter-tall Buddha statue, encased within a circular, lavender-covered mound. Only the Buddha’s head is visible from a distance, creating a sense of mystery and anticipation. Visitors approach the statue by traversing a 40-meter-long tunnel, which amplifies the sound of footsteps, enhancing the contemplative experience. Upon exiting the tunnel, visitors are greeted by the full view of the Buddha under an open sky, creating a profound connection between architecture, nature, and spirituality.
