Matsumoto Castle in Nagano

​Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan’s most iconic and historically significant castles, renowned for its unique architectural features and rich history. It is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Matsumoto Castle is a hirashiro (flatland castle), meaning it was constructed on flat terrain rather than atop a hill or mountain. This strategic placement allowed for expansive defensive structures and a commanding view of the surrounding area. The castle’s main tower, known as the tenshu, is the oldest existing five-tiered, six-story castle tower in Japan, completed around 1594 during the Warring States period.
