Takayama’s Old Town, particularly the Sanmachi Suji district, is a beautifully preserved area that offers a glimpse into Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868). Located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, this historic district is renowned for its traditional wooden merchant houses, sake breweries, and artisan shops. This area comprises three main streets—Kamisannomachi, Nakasannomachi, and Shimosannomachi—lined with well-preserved Edo-era buildings. The district is recognized as a Nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
