FUKUOKA, Japan — In a bid to alleviate urban congestion and spread the economic benefits of inbound travel, Fukuoka Prefecture has launched a new subsidy program offering international tourists financial incentives to stay outside its major metropolitan hubs.
The initiative, dubbed the “Go! Fukuoka” campaign, is backed by a 231 million yen (approximately $1.4 million) budget. Beginning this July, foreign visitors can receive direct discounts on hotel rates—provided they book their stays in municipalities strictly outside of Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City.
How the Subsidy Works
To make the process seamless for travelers, the local government has partnered with major international booking platforms to automatically apply the discount. Key details of the program include:

Discount Value: A reduction of up to 20% on accommodation fees, capped at 3,000 yen (roughly $19) per person, per night.

Geographic Eligibility: Exclusive to inbound international tourists staying in Fukuoka Prefecture, strictly excluding accommodations within Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu.

Booking Platforms: The discount rolled out on Agoda in early July, with Trip.com and Expedia implementing the feature through the end of the month.

Availability: The campaign aims to subsidize approximately 77,000 overnight stays and will run until February 2027, or until the budget is fully depleted.
Pushing Tourism Beyond the Urban Core
As travel to Japan reaches record highs, tourists are increasingly bottlenecked in major transit and urban hubs. By effectively lowering the cost of rural travel, local officials hope to redirect foot traffic to the prefecture’s lesser-known locales. The subsidy makes it more affordable for visitors to explore historically rich and scenic destinations that are often overlooked, such as the coastal cafes of Itoshima, the canal city of Yanagawa, the shrine town of Dazaifu, and the traditional hot springs of Harazuru Onsen.
