Japan Welcomes Record-Breaking 3.69 Million International Visitors in May 2025

Japan continues to see strong momentum in inbound tourism, with 3,693,300 international visitors recorded in May 2025, marking a 21.5% increase compared to the same month last year. This figure not only represents a significant year-on-year rise but also sets a new all-time high for May, surpassing the previous record of 3,040,294 in May 2024 by over 650,000 visitors.

📈 Steady Growth Despite Shoulder Season

May typically falls between Japan’s peak cherry blossom season (March–April) and the summer holiday period (July–August), often resulting in a slight dip in tourist arrivals. However, this year bucked the trend as specific holiday periods and school breaks in certain countries helped sustain high levels of travel demand.

  • In East Asia, China saw particularly strong numbers.

  • In Southeast Asia, the Philippines drove noticeable growth.

  • Among Western markets, the United States continued to lead inbound visitor numbers.

🥇 New Records Across Multiple Markets

A highlight of May 2025 was that 21 individual markets recorded their highest-ever visitor totals for May, including major tourism sources such as:

  • South Korea

  • China

  • Taiwan

  • United States

  • And notably, India, which achieved its highest monthly total on record, not just for May but across all months.

This data underscores Japan’s broadening appeal across both nearby Asian markets and long-haul destinations.

🌏 Looking Ahead

With the summer travel season just around the corner, Japan’s inbound tourism is expected to maintain its upward trajectory. The latest numbers reinforce the country’s strong position as a top global travel destination, powered by diverse seasonal attractions, growing air connectivity, and effective promotional efforts.

Travelers, businesses, and tourism stakeholders alike can look forward to what promises to be a record-setting year for Japan’s tourism industry.
