Total number of foreign visitors to Japan exceeded 2019 and reached a record high.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the estimated number of international visitors to Japan in November 2024 was 3,187,000, marking a 30.6% increase compared to the same month in the previous year and a 30.5% increase compared to November 2019. This figure represents the highest number of visitors for any November on record. Cumulatively, from January to November 2024, the total number of international visitors reached 33,379,900, surpassing the previous annual record set in 2019.

The recovery of flight numbers to 2019 levels by the winter schedule of 2024, coupled with increased demand during the autumn foliage season, contributed to the rise in visitors from countries such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States. Notably, five markets—South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, and France—achieved record-high visitor numbers by November 2024, bringing the total to 16 markets that have set new cumulative records this year.
