The number of foreign visitors reached 2,872,200, up 31.5% on the same month last year and 26.4% on the same month in 2019, marking a record high for the 8th consecutive month. The total number of visitors through September reached 26,880,200, exceeding the previous year’s annual total of 25,066,350.
By market, South Korea returned to first place with 656,700 visitors. China was next with 652,300, followed by Taiwan with 470,600, the United States with 191,900, and Hong Kong with 170,200.
The Japan Tourism Agency also announced that the total amount of consumption by foreigners visiting Japan from July to September was 1.948 trillion yen. This brings the total amount of consumption up to September to 5.9 trillion yen, already surpassing the 5.3 trillion yen spent during the last year, and tourism demand continues to be strong.
